More information about Cadiz

Cádiz is a splendid coastal city known for its immense sandy beaches and surrounded almost entirely by water. It is situated at the most extreme southern point of Spain in the province of Andalucía. Cádiz has a population of 135.000 and is always full of life and buzzing. The city itself is divided into two parts, the Old town and the New town; this one very much resembles many coastal cities or towns along the coast of Spain with many restaurants and bars as well as many roads lined with palm trees.

The Old town or central quarter of Cádiz is where the true character of the city lies. Famous for its picturesque charm, many of the buildings of Cádiz reflect the city's history. The old town looks quite Moorish in appearance, made up of many intriguing narrow cobbled streets leading to many pretty plazas and quaint squares perfect to sit and relax; squares such as Constitución, España, Mentidero, Mina, San Juan de Dios, have their own distinct style. To visit the entire Old town takes an hour by walking around the cape and passing through some lovely parks with sweeping views of the bay. Unlike most other ports of its size, Cadiz's seems immediately easy going and relaxed, not at all threatening, even at night.

Over a long period of time Cádiz has seen many different civilizations - the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Visigoths, the Moors, and of course, the Spaniards; they all contributed to what Cádiz is today leaving their mark on much of its architecture.

When exploring the historical quarter, you should visit the Baroque cathedral, a grand structure with a striking golden dome. Additionally, there are museums with impressive archeological and art collections, such as the Archeological Museum, the Fine Arts Museum, and the Municipal History Museum. Cádiz also has beaches, parks and churches waiting to be explored. The city's gardens, towers and walls are good spots to get great sea views.

Overall, Cadiz is the perfect place to wander about and discover the treasures that the city has to offer. It is an enchanting city with a sense of culture and history as well as a strong character... the perfect spot to learn Spanish!
