Salsa is one of the few Latin American dances that has reached and kept its popularity throughout the world. It started within a music style called Cuban son, a fusion of African percussion with Spanish guitar and song. Nevertheless, this popular dance has been heavily influenced with time by other Latin American countries´ music styles as well as the American jazz.
Salsa is a type of dance with its own choreography. Couple´s arms and legs execute the dance routine in complete natural harmony by making salsa moves seem beautiful and sensual, and not just an energetic dance.
According to the first salsa dancers, composers and musicians, Salsa is an umbrella term containing a wide range of many South American and Cuban rhythms: la guaracha, el mambo, guaguancó, chachachá and most of all, the son Montuno. Since all these dancing styles were very difficult to differentiate, the single term “salsa” was coined in the 1970's to refer to a collective of all these musical styles.
