Information about Playa del Carmen, Mexico
This young, small, Caribbean beach town is a popular tourist destination. Playa del Carmen is located on the Riviera Maya in the state of Quintana Roo, and can be easily accessed by bus from Cancun airport. Visitors can discover in person the history one of the Americas most extensive empires: the Mayan. Tourism is the town's biggest industry, where you can choose from a variety of accommodation options, from large resort complexes to small family-run hotels. You can also find a wide variety of restaurants, but your best option is getting a taste of authentic Mexican food.
The nearby Mayan cities feature wonderfully preserved historical attractions that offer visitors a glimpse into the area's fascinating history. From the pyramid at the old Mayan capital of Chitchen Itza you can take in views of the entire city which includes a Mayan ball court and an astronomical observatory. Tulum, another Mayan city, sits on a white sand beach and researchers continue studying Coba, one of the last Mayan cities to be discovered.
The fantastic Caribbean beaches of Playa del Carmen, which look like a scene taken from a movie, offer the opportunity to try out a wide variety of water sports: snorkeling, scuba diving, windsurfing and kayaking. The coral reef here is the second biggest in the world, and you can take underwater tours here, the natural habitat of marine turtles and tropical fish.
Nature reserves in Quintana Roo state protect its rich wildlife. Nature lovers won't want to miss Xcaret Park or the natural aquariums at the Xel-Ha parks.
